Royal Oak opposes trapping of coyotes on public land, but trapper still working with neighbors

Royal Oak city officials are emphasizing their opposition to allowing any trapping of coyotes on public land after a trapper caught and killed a coyote in a private backyard last week.

“If you don’t want (coyotes) in your yard, clean your yard up and don’t give them the incentive to be there,” Mayor Jim Ellison said. “The city of Royal Oak is not sanctioning the trapping and killing of animals. We need to step back and relax, (coyotes) have been with us for 10 years.”

City Hall was inundated with about a 100 phone calls Monday after a report aired on WXYZ. about trapper Dennis Cronk of Berkley working for several neighbors who live near the Tenhave Woods nature area.

Nearly all of the callers were concerned about the trapping and killing of the coyote and came from people living in other cities and states.
