Identifying Raccoons

Raccoons are known with trash consumption and can live in a wide range of habitats. Their adaptability can bring raccoons to rural areas, urban areas, and suburban areas. Raccoons have curious and shrewd natures that bring them into trouble with humans.

Appearance

The coloring on raccoons make them easily identifiable. Their black encircled eyes are similar to that of a classic burglar mask. Raccoons can reach 3 feet in length and range in weight from 7 to 30 pounds. Their fur is gray with hints of brown, and their tail uniquely displays alternating rings of white and black. Occasionally compared to canines and bears, raccoons have snouts, teeth, and body proportions that appear similar to that of dogs and bears.

Habitat

Raccoons are adaptable and can be found in almost every climate region in the U.S. Some raccoons have even learned to live solely on human garbage. Favorite denning locations of the wild will include forests, marshes, and prairies. Some raccoons will find great areas to den inside of homes and businesses.

Raccoon Problems

Entry

Raccoons are very strong animals that will do whatever it takes to enter an area they desire to be in. They have hands that are structured in such a way that they are able to grasp objects, making entering a home an easy task. Raccoons will tear through roofing materials to enter your attic and rip through air ducts just to find the perfect nesting area. Female raccoons will enter homes in search of safe and warm places to raise her babies, where male raccoons will enter in search of a food source. If you have a raccoon in your home, extensive damages will be done upon entry.

Damage

Raccoons will create damages inside and outside. Outside, raccoons will forage for food and eat vegetation found in gardens and on farmland. This will cause severe damages to lawns, gardens, and farms. Inside, raccoons contaminate homes with droppings and are great carriers of diseases. Their strength and persistence will turn your attic upside down. Raccoons have also been reported to attack livestock such as poultry, and common house pets like dogs and cats.
