Identifying Skunks

Two of the most prominent skunk species include the spotted skunk and the striped skunk. Skunks are well-known for their foul and pungent smell, used as a defense mechanism.

Appearance

Striped Skunks

Striped skunks show two outward-bowing, thick stripes along their backs, which join together near their tails, and white patches on their heads. Striped skunks weigh between 4 and 10 pounds and can measure about 25 inches long.

Spotted Skunks

Spotted skunks have much more of a varied look. They have eccentric-looking striped that are accompanied by few actual spots. Smaller than striped skunks, spotted skunks weigh no more than 3 pounds and grow between 15 and 20 inches long.

Habitat

Skunks are nocturnal animals that are capable of surviving in most climates. During the winter, skunks will rely on fat stores for nourishment and remain holed up in dens for several consecutive days or weeks. Skunks prefer to live in open areas such as prairies, pastures, and forest edges.

Skunk Problems

Entry

Skunks are known to live under buildings, decks, and patios. They will seek nourishment available in areas of human activity, including rodents, garden vegetation, grubs, insects, and trash bins! Skunks have even been reported breaking into chicken coops and stealing eggs or hatchlings.

Damage

Skunks will create quite the problem for a homeowner. As they dig for food they will damage landscapes, plants, and structures. When skunks feel threatened they may spray, causing terrible odors and potentially may cause temporary blindness. Skunks are known transmitters of canine distemper, hepatitis, tularemia, and Q-fever.
